Normal coke is made via high-temperature carbonization (~1000℃). Large semi-coke steam boilers are mature, with annual output up to 0.5–1.1 million tons.

Semi-coke uses low-temperature carbonization (~600℃). Single furnaces mostly produce 30,000 tons/year. Larger units are still in trial. Mass production relies on one-furnace multi-door technology.
